Hello Denise, your friend isn't the only teacher/professor that's struggling with this. There are a few research papers that have now been produced as a result of this trend. Many people in teaching positions are really struggling. The issue isn't only that the students keep on changing their pronouns, or adopting conflicting sets (such as he/them), but also they are finding that there are plenty of students who feel like they are forced to 'out' themselves and rebel against having to give out their pronouns all together.
