Being an Aussie, I’m also able to claim the tax that was deducted by Medium. But at the moment, I’m at as much loss as you are. I certainly don’t want to pay almost $300 for a US tax return and I’m still in a bit of a shock that the rest of the world allows US to bully other citizens into submission.

I get the right to tax someone on an income derived in America, but asking them to go through a bureaucratic maze that wastes time and money, and asking non-US citizens to complete a US tax return is overstepping it. I’m still so furious and disappointed that Australia (and other countries) allow this to happen.

At this point, I’m considering pulling back from any activities that bring me income outside of Australia, and I hate that I’m in a position to have to consider that reality.
