from what Slawa is saying, his family must've been politically connected and bear the associated benefits - financially-wise and freedom-wise.
I come from the same background as you and I remember dire poverty and plenty of injustices.
And, mostly the thought (when I was little) that no matter what I would choose to do (career-wise) I would NEVER be better off than my parents.
I could never own a house or a business, I could never decide what I wanted to wear to work or which hours I would work.
It would be all asigned to me - no personal agency, no personal power over my life, no future...
