Thank you for your comment Brandy; in your example, when you don't know anything about the individual, that's the correct way to respond. But if your child has a group of friends over and one of them says they're hungry and feel like chinese (and that child happens to have pronouns they/them). When you see your child pass by you on their way to the bathroom and ask: Hey, are your friends hungry? and your child responds, Yeah, they said they want chinese - so you get chinese. but it turns out that the rest of the group actually wanted pizza. It's not really appropriate anymore. There is a place for they/them and he/she etc. It's there for a reason, it makes life simpler and efficient.
